Symptoms of a Migraine
According to the Migraine Research Foundation, nearly 40 million Americans suffer from migraines—with a billion sufferers worldwide. This condition has been subdivided into four stages, prodrome, aura, attack, and post-drome—and while not every migraine sufferer experiences all of the stages, each one comes with slightly different symptoms.
- Prodrome: A day or two before a migraine hits, you might notice symptoms such as neck stiffness, constipation, frequent yawning, mood shifts, and increased thirst.
- Aura: Occurring either directly before or during a migraine and lasting anywhere from a few minutes to a full hour, migraine aura can cause vision loss, weakness or numbness in the face or side of the body, difficulty speaking, bright spots or flashes of light, hearing noises, and a pins and needles sensation in the body.
- Attack: If left untreated migraine attacks can last for up to three days. These attacks are typically associated with pain on one side of the head, pulsing pain, sensitivity to light and sound, and nausea or vomiting.
- Post-drome: Following a migraine attack there could be a period of fatigue and confusion, with sudden head movements causing pain temporarily.
