Nutritional Counseling in Phoenix
What you eat matters. What your body can actually do with it matters more.

Nutrition plays a foundational role in every aspect of healing at Breathe Chiropractic — because no matter how good your chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, or massage are, your body cannot repair tissue, build neurotransmitters, regulate hormones, or recover from injury without the raw materials it needs to do so.
What’s “enough” of a particular nutrient for one person isn’t necessarily adequate for someone else. Your genetics, your gut’s ability to absorb nutrients, your toxic load, and your individual biochemistry all determine what your body actually needs — and in what form and quantity. This is why generic supplement recommendations so often fall short.
At Breathe, nutritional counseling is not a one-size-fits-all protocol. It’s a personalized, evidence-informed process guided by both Dr. Carla Freeman and Dr. Jordan Maxwell — whose combined backgrounds in chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, biochemistry, and clinical nutrition give our patients an unusually comprehensive foundation for getting this right.
Our Approach
Dr. Carla Freeman brings nearly two decades of clinical nutritional experience that began long before chiropractic school — as a La Leche League consultant, a holistic health practitioner, and the person her community naturally turned to for nutritional guidance. She has completed advanced postgraduate training in nutrition and is trained in functional lab range interpretation — using routine bloodwork to identify patterns of suboptimal function that conventional interpretation misses. She has conducted hundreds of individualized nutritional evaluations and built personalized supplement and nutrition plans for patients across a wide range of chronic and complex conditions.
Dr. Jordan Maxwell, DC and DACM, brings a biochemistry degree, doctoral-level training in nutrition and physiology, and clinical expertise in Chinese herbal medicine to the nutritional side of your care. His background gives us the ability to approach nutritional support from both Western and Eastern frameworks — often revealing patterns that neither system alone would identify.
Together, they create individualized nutrition and supplement plans that are targeted, evidence-based, and designed to actually work — not just address your symptoms on paper.
Test, Don’t Guess
Many of our patients have been following nutrition and lifestyle recommendations for years and still deal with chronic symptoms. They’re eating well. They’re taking supplements. And they’re still struggling.
This is one of the most frustrating clinical pictures we encounter — and one of the most common. The problem is rarely that the patient isn’t trying hard enough. It’s that without objective data, even the best nutritional recommendations are educated guesses.
A specific nutrient may be the key to your situation — but there are critical questions that need answers first:
How deficient are you in that nutrient?
- How much do you need to take to correct that deficiency?
- Are there cofactors you need alongside it for it to be active?
- Do you have toxins or heavy metals blocking absorption?
- Does your gut have the integrity to properly break down and assimilate nutrients?
- Do you have genetic variations that change how your body uses certain nutrients?
Without answers to these questions, you can spend significant time and money cycling through supplements without ever finding the combination that actually moves the needle — a pattern we call pill fatigue.
Instead of guesswork, Dr. Carla and Dr. Maxwell use a targeted, informed strategy that combines thorough health history, neuro-reflex testing, and functional lab testing to build a clear picture of your unique nutritional needs.
Functional Lab Testing
We offer three foundational functional lab tests that give us objective, personalized data to guide your nutritional plan:
GI Spotlight — A comprehensive gut microbiome analysis assessing microbial diversity, gut barrier integrity, digestive function, inflammatory status, and fungal balance. Because none of your supplements can work if your gut isn’t absorbing them.
Genomic Spotlight — A DNA test that reveals how your genes are actually influencing your health across eight key areas including methylation, detoxification, hormonal function, and cognitive health. Understanding your genetic blueprint helps us recommend the interventions most likely to work for your specific physiology.
Metabolomics Spotlight — A urine-based test that measures your unique metabolic fingerprint — how efficiently your body is producing energy, processing nutrients, managing inflammation, and regulating neurotransmitters. The most comprehensive picture of how your biochemistry is actually functioning right now.
Lab kits are mailed directly to your home. Results are reviewed with you in a dedicated consultation — available in person or via telehealth.
Professional-Grade Supplements
When supplementation is indicated, we recommend pharmaceutical-grade, clinically tested products — not grocery store brands loaded with fillers and questionable bioavailability. Our supplement recommendations are specific to your needs and your results — never based on what you heard advertised.
