Your First Acupuncture Visit

Dr. Jordan Maxwell DC and DACM performing acupuncture on patient's feet at Breathe Chiropractic in Phoenix ArizonaChiropractic care at Breathe looks and feels different from what most people expect — especially if you’ve had a less-than-great experience somewhere else. Our approach is gentle, precise, and rooted in nervous system health. We’re not just looking for what’s out of place. We’re looking for why your body is struggling to heal.

If you’ve never had acupuncture before — or if you’ve been curious but nervous — this section is for you. Dr. Jordan Maxwell, DC and DACM, brings two complete doctorates and a deeply personal healing story to every patient he sees. He’s warm, unhurried, and extraordinarily good at making first-timers feel at ease.

Let’s address the needle question first.

Yes, acupuncture involves needles. But they are nothing like the needles you’re thinking of. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin — so fine that most patients feel little to nothing when they’re placed. What people most commonly describe is a mild heaviness, warmth, or gentle tingling at the needle site — sensations that signal your body is responding. Many patients fall asleep on the table. Seriously.

What happens:

Step 1 — Consultation

Dr. Maxwell will take a comprehensive health history rooted in both Western medicine and Chinese medicine diagnostics. He’s looking at your whole system — energy flow, organ function, emotional patterns, and physical symptoms — to understand your unique picture.

Step 2 — Exam and Assessment

Acupuncture diagnosis includes pulse and tongue assessment alongside standard clinical evaluation. This might feel different from what you’re used to — that’s intentional. Chinese medicine sees the body through a different lens, and that lens often reveals things Western approaches miss.

Step 3 — Your First Treatment

In most cases Dr. Maxwell will begin treatment at your first visit. Needles are placed at specific acupuncture points — selected based on your individual pattern — and you’ll rest comfortably for 20 to 40 minutes while your body responds. Most patients leave feeling deeply relaxed, lighter, and surprisingly calm.

Step 4 — Care Plan Discussion

Before you leave, Dr. Maxwell will walk you through what he found, what he recommends, and how often he suggests you come in. He’ll also discuss how acupuncture can work alongside chiropractic care if that’s relevant to your goals.
